You know you want to begin your own newsletter.
You know it's CRITICAL to staying in touch with prospective clients, so they will buy from you down the track.
But where do you begin this daunting project? In this article I'll make it easy for you, taking you through a step by step process.
In Part I we discussed your target market, how to source/write articles, and the best format for your newsletter.
Now let's jump into the best length for your ezine, how to get subscribers, and how to manage all those subscribers - the technicalities!
How Long Should it Be?
I say keep it short. People have limited attention spans, and you're goal should be to give them value in a short space of time.
One of my favorites is never longer than a page, so I almost always read it.
In fact, this newsletter was starting to get a bit long so I split it into two...
Make It Interactive
A newsletter list is not only to gain clients, but also to find out more about what your prospective clients need and want so you can better help them. Consider asking for input from your audience right in your newsletter on what content they would like to see. And to get a better response, reward them for their answers with a free download, more information, or a free session.
You can also do a question and answer section to answer questions posed by your subscribers. Make sure there is a way to contact you listed in each newsletter.
And, finally, don't be afraid to let your personality out. People love to interact with people who feel real.
Now that you have your newsletter ready to go, who do you send it to? You can purchase a mailing list, but you can't be sure if the people on that list would be your best clients or customers. And you don't want to be accused of SPAM when you just start out.
A slower, but safer way is to send your first newsletter to current clients and friends. Ask them for their help in sending the newsletter out to their network. And - let them know this is a one-off sending - they are NOT subscribed to your mailing list, and they should please e-mail you if they would like to be subscribed.
If you are involved in certain forums or discussion groups, you may be able to post your newsletter there. Be aware of the forum rules and make sure you have a feel for whether this would be appropriate or not. Some groups have specific ad days.

How to Manage Your Ezine
Managing a newsletter list can become a pain pretty fast if you don't automate it. You don't want to spend a lot of your time subscribing, unsubscribing and dealing with bounced e-mails.
Check with your web host to see if they have a free system. Some web hosts have the ability to send newsletters.
If you are just starting out and are looking for free systems you can use places like:
Warning: Most free systems come with ads on your newsletters.
A fantastic free program is PHPList. One catch is you need to install it yourself, or even better - you can pay them to install it for you on your web server. That's the second catch - you need to have a web host to host your site, and you need access to the server
The Best Option
Or, you can use the amazing system I use - with so many bells and whistles
I couldn't even begin to cover them here. I like it so much I wrote a
comprehensive review of it, and even created an online video! You can
find my review of the system I use, watch the video, and even get a free
30 day trial, here:
